The Stingray (sometimes referred to as Galuchat) belongs to the family of the Dasiatids (Dasyatis). There are thirty-nine species in nature.

The Samurai Shogun used it mainly for their armor. In Europe the first great craftsman who used stingray skin was Jean-Claude Galuchat who in the eighteenth century became very famous in France for his masterpieces.
Almost two centuries later, the great artisans of Art Déco and furniture makers Paul Iribe, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Jean-Michel Frank and John Paul Cooper resumed the tradition of Galuchat using stingray skin in a greater number of pieces, often combining it with inserts in ivory, ebony, precious metals and colored with bright colors.
