The real leather is a natural product, therefore the signs and imperfections on its surface, such as wrinkles, veins, scars and scratches as well as color differences are not to be considered defects but typical characteristics that enhance the beauty of the real leather and distinguish it from synthetic leather and other artificial products.
FURNITURE AND UPHOLSTERY LEATHER CATEGORIES
Furniture leathers are obtained from big hides, the minimum size should be around 3.60-3.80 m2 (38-40 SqFt); the main features are good softness combined with weak elasticity, so as not to get deformed when used. Furniture and upholstery leathers can be divided as follows:
• FULL GRAIN ANILINE LEATHER
These leathers don’t have any finish coating and maintain all the original characteristics of the hide; the little finish present serves to unify the colors and to give some waterproofness of the surface.
• FULL GRAIN SEMI-ANILINE LEATHER
Hides finished with a thin layer of pigmented dyes which enable to mask small defects, but at the same time do not affect the quality and look of full grain hide.
• TOP-GRAIN LEATHER
The hide grain is slightly sanded to mask small defects and is then finished with a thin layer of top coating.
• CORRECTED-GRAIN LEATHER
The grain is deeply sanded to mask most defects before the surface coating is applied. A decorative grain pattern is then embossed into the surface.
• NUBUK GRAIN LEATHER
The hide surface is slightly buffed on the grain side producing a velvet-like surface.
CLIMATE PROBLEMS
No matter which kind of product you have to manufacture, the physical characteristics of the leathers must be carefully considered, with special attention to the use and the geographical area they are intended, because the climate can cause different reactions (for instance mildew) in the final product.
